3 Days from Fes to Merzouga desert Itinerary

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Your adventure begins with an early departure from Fes, heading south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, often called the Switzerland of Morocco due to its alpine-style architecture. Next, visit the Cedar Forest of Azrou, where you can see Barbary macaque monkeys.

Continuing through Midelt, enjoy scenic views of the Ziz Valley, known for its lush palm groves and ancient kasbahs. As you reach Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert, you’ll trade your vehicle for camels and embark on a sunset camel trek across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Arrive at a luxury desert camp, enjoy a traditional Berber dinner, and experience an evening of music under the starlit sky.

Day 2: Merzouga – Khamliya Village – Nomad Experience

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes, then enjoy a traditional breakfast at the camp before heading out for a day of exploration.

Start by visiting Khamliya Village, home to the Gnawa people, originally from Sub-Saharan Africa, known for their spiritual music and dance. Enjoy a live Gnawa music performance before continuing into the desert.

Next, meet Berber nomadic families and gain insight into their traditional desert lifestyle, seeing how they live in handmade tents and herd camels and goats. Continue to the black volcanic rock desert and the oasis of Hassi Labied, before returning to your riad for a relaxed evening.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Ziz Valley – Fes

After breakfast, visit Rissani, the former capital of the Alawite dynasty and home to one of the largest traditional markets in Morocco. Stroll through the lively souks, known for their dates, spices, and local crafts.

Travel back through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping for scenic views and breaks along the way. Arrive in Fes in the evening, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad.
